Congratulations on receiving your National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) assessment! This is a huge step, and it can feel overwhelming to look at a list of required exams. The key to success is to create a plan and tackle your exams strategically.
Order Your Exams for Success
We strongly recommend that students begin with the Constitutional Law exam. This course forms a vital foundation for many other subjects. For example, the Criminal Law syllabus is heavily influenced by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which provides legal protections such as those against unreasonable search and seizure, unlawful detention, and other rights found in sections 7-15. You will also find constitutional law topics woven into Administrative Law and extensively in Foundations of Canadian Law. If your schedule permits, make Constitutional Law your top priority.
As for the Foundations of Canadian Law exam, we do not recommend taking it first. We suggest you complete both the Constitutional Law and Administrative Law exams before attempting this one. The Foundations exams can be highly unpredictable and occasionally test material not explicitly on the syllabus. A solid background in Constitutional and Administrative Law will significantly improve your chances of success.
Professional Responsibility is generally a lighter exam that requires less intensive preparation. It can be a good one to pair with a more difficult exam to balance your workload.
Planning Your Exam Sessions
The NCA does not offer every exam in every session, but core subjects are typically available. This means you need to be a strategic planner. It's often best to take as many exams as you can reasonably handle in a single session. This keeps the momentum going and allows you to complete your requirements sooner. Of course, this depends on your personal circumstances and work-life balance. Remember, thorough preparation is more important than rushing.
The important thing is to create a schedule that works for you. Use your assessment to build a roadmap for your NCA journey and break it down into manageable steps.
